My inspiration for this piece is a quote by Flanner O'Connor - "All human nature resists grace because grace changes us and change is painful. "
We as Southerners have a longstanding tradition of being overly religious in our words but not necessarily in our actions. We have a lot of hidden truths. Flannery raised pea fowl at Andalusia where she lived the last years of her life. They have a graceful beauty, but also a prideful personality . Southerners are sometimes extremely proud and don't always accept grace easily. We think our resilience is all we need. We tend to judge and not extend grace easily either. This painting reminded me of my relationship with my grandmother as I was growing up. "G, I apologize for not giving you more grace while you were with us." Kimmy ;D
