The words of Otis Redding's song, "Coffee and Cigarettes" was the inspiration for this piece. Otis, an incredible singer and songwriter, the lyrics tell a simplistic truth. For such a young person he had incredible wisdom and insight into human relationships. The lyrics to Otis' songs tend to resonate in your Soul and take you to places forgotten. I recall hours spent as a child listening to my great aunts and grandmother telling stories late at night around a table in Macon. Smoking cigarettes and drinking lots of coffee as they gossiped about our family and shared stories of their younger days together. We would listen and pretend we were asleep on the couch nearby. The words of this song also bring to mind the hours spent talking on the phone to a new love interest. Just talking and listening for hours on end hoping to learn something new about this person.
