St. Abuna Aregawi
Legacy:
St. Abuna Aregawi, one of the Nine Saints, revitalized Christianity in Ethiopia after fleeing Roman persecution.
Founding Debre Damo:
A disciple of the Coptic monk Pachomius, Aregawi established the revered Debre Damo monastery in Tigray. Divine aid, symbolized by a serpent, enabled his ascent of the steep mountain.
Guiding Kings:
Aregawi advised King Kaleb during a critical South Arabian expedition, leaving a spiritual and political legacy.
Divine Assistance:
A miraculous serpent lifted the saint up the mountain—a sacred motif in Ethiopian tradition—preserving the faith and ancient manuscripts within the monastery.
