Blending sacred tradition with contemporary expression through hand-painted icons, fine art, and spiritual design.
MessageHaile Maskel is an Ethiopian Orthodox iconographer based in London, UK, whose work is rooted in the ancient traditions of Tewahedo Christian art. With a career that began in 1995, Haile has dedicated his life to preserving and revitalizing the spiritual language of Ethiopian iconography. His hand-painted works draw from centuries-old techniques while embracing a personal, contemporary vision that resonates with both devotional and artistic audiences.
Haile’s icons—depicting saints, angels, and scenes from Scripture—have been exhibited in sacred spaces, galleries, and private collections. Through his studio Konjo Arts, he also produces fine art prints, wearable sacred art, and educational materials to share the depth and beauty of his heritage with global audiences.
Deeply inspired by prayer, liturgy, and the vibrant palette of traditional Ethiopian manuscripts, Haile continues to create, teach, and collaborate, sharing the power of sacred art as a living expression of faith.
Statement
My work is a prayer in color and line.
As an Ethiopian Orthodox iconographer, I seek to honor the sacred traditions passed down through generations while offering a contemporary expression of ancient faith. Each icon I create is rooted in the visual language of Tewahedo Christianity—rich with symbolism, devotion, and spiritual guidance.
Through the careful use of color, form, and storytelling, I strive to make the unseen visible—to reflect the divine presence in saints, angels, and holy figures. Whether painted on wood, parchment, or digital media, my icons are made to inspire contemplation, strengthen faith, and connect hearts across cultures.
By sharing this sacred heritage through exhibitions, wearable art, and fine prints, I hope to keep this tradition alive—not only as a historical treasure, but as a living, breathing act of worship.
