Archangel St. Raphael – The Whale and the Church
This painting depicts a miraculous story from Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, where Archangel Raphael intervenes to save a sacred church built atop a giant whale. When Satan causes the whale to move, threatening the church, believers unite in prayer. In response, God sends Archangel Raphael, who pierces the whale with his staff and commands it to stay still—saving the holy place.
Celebrated on Pagumen 3 (September 8), Raphael is honored as a divine protector and healer.
