"Heimat" is a German word for "homeland" and is one of the pieces that speaks to my feelings that nature is our true home. When my husband joined the Army early in our married life, we moved away from the Central Valley of California where we had both been born and raised; we were ready for adventure. What I wasn't prepared for was how much I would long for the dry brown hills and open oak woodlands that were my home. We enjoyed our travels around the world but we always felt like Dorothy chanting, "There's no place like home." This piece especially highlights the open oak woods and the wildlife I love to see there, always evoking that sense of home.
