Judith Monroe
Antelope, CA
Inspired by nature, California native Judith Monroe blends photography, collage and painting to create artworks that nourish the soul.
MessageEncouraged to be creative from a young age, Judith Monroe began to express herself with words until she discovered the magic of darkroom photography in a college class. Beginning with hand coloring, Judith gradually added more visual and physical layers to her photographs. She creates works with original photographs that blend into color, texture, and hidden treasures waiting for discovery, finding inspiration by exploring the landscape and examining the natural things she finds. Layers of physical materials like ephemera, photos and paint, represent layers of meaning. Her artworks are included in public and private collections from Sacramento to Scotland and are available in galleries in California and Arizona.
Statement
“Sometimes we go through our daily lives and are overcome by all the stress and busyness of our modern world. It can numb our senses and make us feel like the walking dead. It’s easy to forget that the world we live in is an amazing place, filled with fascinating natural objects, a place that can refresh us and make us feel alive again. As I go about my daily routines, I try to focus on the natural world around me. Whether it is taking a walk through the nearby woods, walking my dogs in a local park, or stopping to view some tiny jewel of an insect, I find that I do not want to pull myself away. So instead of separating myself from these natural wonders, I surround myself with them, collecting individual specimens, taking photographs, and making artworks. In all these things, I find solace and peace and reminders of my faith. A breeze is God’s caress across my face, a leaf is a symbol for growth, a butterfly is a reminder of our potential for transformation into something better than we are today.” Judith Monroe
