This project is conceived as a set of embroideries done with golden thread on paper. It consists of the ten coats of arms used by the Republic of Colombia. The series begins with the emblem established by Charles V of Spain, corresponding to the current coat of arms of Bogotá in 1548. It also includes the emblem of the United Provinces of New Granada (1811-16), the three coats of arms of Gran Colombia (1819-1830), the coat of arms of the United States of Colombia (1861), the Regeneration coat of arms , published in the El Zancudo Newspaper (1890), and the different coats of arms of the Republic of Colombia from 1924 to the present.
This action seeks to give visibility to these national symbols, generating a contrast between the history of embroidery, understood as a medium of representation tied to symbols of wealth, social position, and power, and a history that dates back to the XVI century, when images were already reproduced through teaching by friars who instructed indigenous people in the New Hispanic provinces. In this context, the series uses semi-precious materials such as gold, silver, and silk to question the fragility of the idea of the Nation, using paper as the support. In this way, the pieces seeks to highlight the symbolic richness of the emblem and the importance of values as strong as Justice, Liberty, Equality and Peace.
