This piece is part of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles” (Between Invisible Systems), a trans-disciplinary body of work of fiber, video, and performative dancing that unravels hidden systems of oppression in our daily lives. This project started during the initial stages of the 2021 protests in Colombia and was conceived as part of the whole project of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles.”
“Entre Mola y baile” translates into English as “Between Mola and dancing.”
This piece involves the reverse-appliqué technique of Mola, laser-cut fabric, screen-print foil transfer, and hand and machine stitching. This is the textile work resulting from the eponymous performance of dancing salsa. Glue was ritualistically applied to my bare feet as I danced salsa over the textile panel. The movement of the dance leaves a visual testimony of the foil transfer to the glue marks. These are further revealed on the fabric in gold and copper. My practice is connected to my experience as a Colombian immigrant. I carry traditions from Colombia and my family such as dancing which merges with my fiber work. I dance informal salsa from Bogotá, which I learned growing up at family parties. This process acts as a mapping practice, tracing my family’s migratory journeys using the ancestral knowledge of stitching, and dancing that is integral to my personal and cultural histories.
