This piece is part of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles” (Between Invisible Systems), a trans-disciplinary body of work of fiber, video, and performative dancing that unravels hidden systems of oppression in our daily lives. This project started during the initial stages of the 2021 protests in Colombia and was conceived as part of the whole project of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles.”
“Entre camuflados verde y rojo” translates into English as “Between green and red camouflage.”
This piece involves various processes such as Mola and laser-cut fabric. Along with hand and machine sewing and embroidery. I sewed layers of cloth together, including Colombian camouflage from 2005, mostly used by the military, and other armed groups such as guerillas and paramilitaries. I laboriously stitched bold multi-colored layers of laser-cut fabric together one layer at a time using the traditional Mola technique. The Mola process is a reverse appliqué method that originated with the Gunas Indigenous Latin American communities in which layers of different colored cloth are nearly invisibly sewn together and then worked on or cut away to reveal a multi-dimensional design. Mola-designed material is used in numerous contemporary ways such as shoes, bags, and home linens.
