Biomorphic Abstracts
My recent work has been largely focused on biomorphic abstraction which is abstraction that “incorporates a visual language based on biomorphic shapes—bulbous, lush, sumptuous looking forms—that are neither representative nor geometric.” These shapes began to intrigue me during the pandemic when I started a new series with artwork and titles that were meant to be whimsical. I felt that not only I but others needed some comic relief during this rather grim and isolating timeframe. When I created the first biomorphic piece it morphed into a fruit-based theme . As the artwork developed and was near completion, I noticed there was a large area that needed more interest. I happened to look over at a cardboard box that I had brought back from the store to carry my groceries and saw a beautiful graphic of lemons. So, I pulled portions of the printed design and collaged them onto the artwork. After creating a number of pieces with this theme I moved on the create pieces that were garden centric or have themes around relationships to ourselves and others; eliminating the collage elements.
Lyrical Storybook
Lyrical Storybook is an offshoot of the biomorphic abstract series that adds more line work / mark making and fewer recognizable oval or bulbous structures to the artwork. As in the biomorphic abstracts figures can be identified within the structure of each piece.
Finding Our Way
Finding Our Way is a mixed media series that was inspired by two words from a magazine article: right path. From there I created pieces related to the concept of selecting the right path—one that enables us to shape our future and lead us to a better place than the path we’re currently following. We may have a road map to reach our goal, or we may embark on a path based on a series of choices, stacked one upon the other, as we move forward in our lives.
Wild and Free
The Wild and Free collection comprises artwork that was created outside any specific series. Each piece was created with a carefree freedom to try something a bit different from any of the other collections or series.
Life's Progression
Life's Progression is a a series focused on our progression through life's challenges and and how we overcome them.
Square Bites
Square bites are all smaller works on paper that may have the same themes as other collections yet are more affordable than the other pieces.
Ride(r) Series
How did I decide to create this series. What was the motivation or inspiration that got me started? Well...in looking around my studio I recalled a few pieces I had started that I never felt were really fully developed and were abandoned before they even had a chance or were created to test out another artist's process.
So I thought why not use these to start with as it is aways nice to have something down first rather than starting from a blank slate. Also, why not create something more artistic and appealing from something that is not and is just sitting around in the "out" bin. The common element is all the pieces is a piece of swirled tissue paper that reminded me of wheels and thus became the title for each piece in the series.
