**Dodgy Donald (Portrait of a Malignant Narcissist)**
*Oil on canvas 2019*

American Verismo embraces the belief that portraiture can reveal character as well as appearance. In *Dodgy Donald*, the artist presents a smiling Donald Trump whose expression hovers uneasily between charm, self-satisfaction, and calculation. The smile is inviting at first glance, yet beneath the surface lies an ambiguity that encourages closer scrutiny. Like many effective portraits, the work asks not simply, "What does this person look like?" but rather, "Who is this person?"

The painting is built upon a strong structure of light and shadow, employing a limited palette and direct brushwork characteristic of the American Verismo approach. Broad passages of cool gray and blue establish the larger masses, while abbreviated strokes model the face with remarkable economy. Details are sacrificed in favor of essential forms, allowing the portrait to emerge through a macchia of values rather than photographic description. The result is both painterly and psychologically charged.

The subtitle, *Portrait of a Malignant Narcissist*, references the work of the social philosopher and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, who described malignant narcissism as one of the most dangerous forms of human pathology. Fromm associated it with grandiosity, an insatiable hunger for admiration, a lack of empathy, and the tendency to treat other human beings as instruments of personal power. Unlike ordinary vanity, malignant narcissism can become socially destructive when amplified through political authority.

Viewed through this lens, the portrait becomes more than a likeness of a public figure. It becomes an exploration of a personality structure that increasingly shapes modern political life. The smile ceases to be merely a smile; it becomes a mask behind which ambition, grievance, self-regard, and domination may reside. The painting invites reflection upon how such traits affect institutions, public discourse, and the daily lives of ordinary citizens.

The nineteenth-century Macchiaioli painters, whose influence informs American Verismo, did not retreat from the social realities of their age. Many supported the Risorgimento and fought alongside Garibaldi in the struggle for a democratic Italy. They believed that artists should engage with the world around them rather than retreat into decorative fantasy. American Verismo continues that tradition by recognizing that the portrait can serve not only as a celebration of an individual but also as a commentary on the forces shaping society.

In *Dodgy Donald*, the artist employs the language of paint to examine the intersection of personality and power. The portrait stands as both an aesthetic exercise in light, mass, and brushwork and a meditation on the consequences of leadership when self-interest overwhelms empathy. It reminds us that portraiture, at its best, can illuminate not only a face but an era.

One of the strongest aspects of this painting is that it avoids the obvious caricature of the shouting Trump seen in *Portrait of a Lunatic*. Here the danger is subtler. The smile, the half-closed eyes, and the relaxed demeanor suggest confidence and self-satisfaction. The viewer is left to wonder what lies behind the expression. That ambiguity gives the work a more psychological quality and makes it, in some ways, the more unsettling portrait.
