Artist Statement:
My work is somewhere between traditional and contemporary. Weaving with paper, from imagining to painting to weaving, gives voice to my passion for color and pattern and a fascination with geometry. Diagonal twill weaving lends itself well to geometric pattern weaving, enabling me to add pictures to my baskets. I designed the rain, clouds, and dancing figures on Dancing on Raindrops to tell a story of joy and abundance that only water can provide.
Technique:
My diagonal twill baskets are made with 140# cold-press cotton watercolor paper, which I paint with acrylics and cut into long strips with a pasta cutter. Weaving with 4mm, the basket starts with a split herringbone base. Color placement is crucial because the base is folded, intricately interlacing the stakes so they become the warp and weft. The complex twill pattern is woven on the diagonal. The top of the basket includes decreasing rows, narrowing the top, culminating in a V-lashed 18mm rim.
