Marilyn Henrion

A.. Chromatic Geometry

Marilyn Henrion presents her latest series of mixed media, hand-quilted artworks. In her 93rd year, she returns to her original exploration of geometric abstraction, inviting deeper reflection on the intricate interplay of color, form, and texture. Hand quilting coupled with digitally manipulated photography offers a contemporary aesthetic experience while honoring traditional fine craftsmanship.

H..Impressions- Collage

These linen collages are created with fabric images derived from my digitally manipulated photographs of places in which I have lived or visited. They evoke the feeling of a particular place in an impressionistic style rather than a representational one, conveying a mood rather than a literal depiction. Reflective of fleeting impressions one experiences when traveling in a moving vehicle or on a fast walk,

B.. Innuendos- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted

In this series, the artist continues to find inspiration in architecture and man-made objects, as well as in the natural world and the intersection of the two. The use of digital manipulation on the photographs adds a layer of complexity and originality to the works. It develops a strong conversation between the past and the present, pushing the boundaries of convention. The hand-quilting process used on the cotton-printed photographs reveals patience and dedication to crafting truly unique surface textures. The works brim with creativity, embodying a seamless blend of traditional craft techniques and modern digital manipulation, an innovative and unique intersection between technology and handicraft. Although all of the images that I create from my original photographs are manipulated in the computer before I commit them to a work, I am often conflicted about how much abstraction I want to employ. A fascination with the detail in the subject depicted vies with the personal emotional component conveyed in the abstraction. This conflict resonates with the poem by Wallace Stevens… “I do not know which to prefer, The beauty of inflections Or the beauty of innuendos, The blackbird whistling Or just after.”

C..Mannahatta- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted

A series of artworks that celebrate the architectural history of Manhattan. As a life-long New Yorker, Marilyn Henrion's vision has always been deeply rooted in the urban geometry of her surroundings, from the earlier geometric abstractions to the more recent mixed media works. She is particularly interested in the co-existence of past and present, especially in architecture and other man-made structures. Built during different periods in the history of Manhattan, we can delight in seeing them simultaneously, often side by side Both above and below ground, these rich visual treats abound as she makes her way through her neighborhood streets of Soho, lower Manhattan and beyond. Throughout the ages, the presence of the human hand upon the landscape has always expressed our eternal yearning for immortality, evidence that says “I was once here”. Much as Edward Hopper did in the 20th century, Henrion synthesizes and transforms the “facts” of the material world to reflect her experience of a particular place. Whether focusing on historic landmarks with new eyes, or construction sites that testify to the vibrant ever-evolving cityscape, her objective is to illuminate beauty in unexpected places…a subway entrance, a doorway, a fire escape, a rooftop. Mannahatta was the original native American name for the island of Manhattan. The images are derived from architectural structures built during different periods in the history of the island and which can all be seen simultaneously in the co-existence of past and present. The quilting design of overlapping concentric circles is symbolic of the ephemeral nature of our existence on this landscape….we are here for a while and then gone, while the structures remain. D..New Digs: Texas- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted

Having lived in Greenwich Village all of my adult life, my aesthetic vision was always deeply rooted in the urban geometry of my surroundings, whether at home or in my travels. I have always been particularly interested in the co-existence of past and present, especially in architecture and other man-made structures. Throughout the ages, the presence of the human hand upon the landscape has always expressed our eternal yearning for immortality, evidence that says “I was once here”. Much as Edward Hopper did in the 20th century, I synthesize and transform the“facts” of the material world to reflect my experience of a particular place, striving to illuminate beauty in unexpected places...a subway entrance, a doorway, a fire escape, a rooftop. While my original medium was paint, I discovered early on that textiles spoke to me in a way that paint never did, and the marriage of the ancient art of hand quilting with modern technology has resulted in the mixed media process that became my medium of choice. In 2022, after spending my first ninety years as a New York City resident in Greenwich Village, I made the decision to move my studio and establish a new home in Plano Texas. The primary motivation was to be near my son who was dealing with serious medical issues, but my sense of adventure and love of new vistas to explore added a strong impetus. While the subject matter of my new work changes as it reflects my surroundings, the focus shifts to the natural world and its interaction with man-made structures.

F..European Odyssey- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted

Mixed media hand-quilted artworks by Marilyn Henrion inspired by travels in Ireland and England. Inspired by my travels in Ireland (2019) and England (2003), these mixed media works were created in 2020 and 2021. Once again, I return to recurring themes in my work, that of a fascination with the intersections of past and present and of man’s eternal quest for immortality in the architecture and man-made structures he leaves behind that say, “I was once here.” In a sense, the hand quilting that animates the surfaces of the work echoes that quest by the artist. A visual treat of European cities inspired by my travels in France, Belgium, Austria, Poland, and Hungary. The works are derived from my digitally manipulated photographs which are pigment printed on cotton and silk, hand quilted, and gallery-wrapped on stretched canvas. J..New Orleans Revisited- Mixed Media

This series features a series of mixed media artworks based on the architecture and color of New Orleans neighborhoods. In 2017, I was in New Orleans in conjunction with an exhibition of my work at the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery. Fifty years after my last visit in the 1960’s. I found a vibrant city that had survived the harshest devastation of nature in the form of hurricane Katrina in 2010…..not only survived, but audaciously so, with all the color and sassiness imaginable. With the most generous Southern hospitality of my host, Bea Fitzpatrick, a New Orleans native to whom I am most grateful, I had the opportunity not only to become reacquainted with the streets of the Garden District and the French Quarter which had lingered in my memory, but to become introduced to hitherto unexplored neighborhoods such as Marigny and Bywater. My camera recorded the images which were later digitally manipulated in my computer and printed onto fabric. The resulting series includes linen collages as well as hand-quilted works. The concentric circles of the hand-quilting patterns echo the ripples of water that are left in memory only. The quotations that are interspersed with the images reflect the impact that this city has had on artists for generations and no doubt will have for generations to come. The series focuses on the vibrant colors of several neighborhoods in New Orleans seven years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Mixed media on cotton, and linen, hand quilted, and collage works on stretched canvas. G..Patchwork City- Collage

As a life-long New Yorker, Marilyn Henrion’s aesthetic vision has always been deeply rooted in the urban geometry of her surroundings, from her earlier hand-quilted geometric abstractions to the more recent mixed media works. The Patchwork City series, created between 2015 and 2017, captures the energy and vitality of the ever-changing urban landscape. The new works are composed of the artist’s own digitally manipulated architectural photographs which are pigment-printed on linen, cut apart, and reassembled to create collages on stretched canvas. Some also incorporate hand quilting on silk, a technique present in her earlier works. Often focusing on the “window” and its metaphorical implications, Henrion transforms the “facts” of the material world to reflect her own experience of a particular place, much as Edward Hopper had done in the last century. Drawn from my photographic images of urban architecture which are digitally manipulated and pigment-printed on linen, these collages capture the energy and vitality of the ever-changing urban landscape. The linen collages are created on a substrate of stretched canvas. Video of collection on Youtube: https://youtu.be/Xu_GVeP0Bwc?si=MMKaY5l0nZDHRiaV

I..Echoes- Mixed Media/Hand Quilted

“Footfalls echo in the memory….” T.S. Eliot “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.” William Faulkner These small mixed media works comprise impressionistic images inspired by places where I have lived and to which I have traveled over the past ninety years. From photographs that I have taken over the years, echoes of those visual memories come to life again, transformed by combining new technology with ancient handwork.

M..Soft City- Mixed Media/Hand Quilted

As a native New Yorker, I created this series of works to represent my personal take on the city, revealing its soft side, with unexpected visual treats lurking around every corner. Once Gotham’s hard unyielding surfaces are peeled back, the beautiful and complex patina of each facade is illuminated. These mixed media works represent a fusion of past and present. Ancient needlework techniques are combined with digitally manipulated photography and inkjet printing to create works of art that reflect contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. The presence of the hand-stitching both animates the surfaces of the works and, at the same time, softens and humanizes the urban geometry by the irregular qualities of texture inherent in the materials and construction. L..Windows- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted

This series focuses on the metaphorical implications of the window which, from Renaissance painting to cinema and cyberspace, has always been perceived as a mediator between spaces. "Windows" is the visual bridge between inside and out. Though transparent, the window may serve as the barrier or the link between the inside viewer and the world outside. The works are composed of digitally manipulated images that are printed on silk or cotton, hand-quilted, and gallery-wrapped on stretched canvas.

P..Abstract - Pieced/Hand Quilted Works

This group of works consists of hand quilted pieced works from various geometric abstraction series that were created between 1989 and 2013.

N..Complexity (Nature)- Mixed Media/Hand Quilted

Inspired by the natural world, these mixed media works are created by printing my digitally manipulated photographs on fabric, adding a layer of depth and animation to the surfaces by hand quilting with silk thread. The works find resonance in the scientific theory of complexity.

Q..Noise Collection - Hooked Works

These hand-hooked works continue my exploration of geometric abstraction in a variety of textile-based forms, from hand-quilted pieced works to hand-hooked works, all celebrating that intimate and irregular quality of the human hand that softens the hard edges of geometric abstraction.
