MessageCollection: D..New Digs: Texas- Mixed Media/ Hand Quilted
Having lived in Greenwich Village all of my adult life, my aesthetic vision was always deeply rooted in the urban geometry of my surroundings, whether at home or in my travels. I have always been particularly interested in the co-existence of past and present, especially in architecture and other man-made structures. Throughout the ages, the presence of the human hand upon the landscape has always expressed our eternal yearning for immortality, evidence that says “I was once here”. Much as Edward Hopper did in the 20th century, I synthesize and transform the“facts” of the material world to reflect my experience of a particular place, striving to illuminate beauty in unexpected places...a subway entrance, a doorway, a fire escape, a rooftop. While my original medium was paint, I discovered early on that textiles spoke to me in a way that paint never did, and the marriage of the ancient art of hand quilting with modern technology has resulted in the mixed media process that became my medium of choice.
In 2022, after spending my first ninety years as a New York City resident in Greenwich Village, I made the decision to move my studio and establish a new home in Plano Texas. The primary motivation was to be near my son who was dealing with serious medical issues, but my sense of adventure and love of new vistas to explore added a strong impetus. While the subject matter of my new work changes as it reflects my surroundings, the focus shifts to the natural world and its interaction with man-made structures.
