I’m Andrew Gunnar Norquist, a Providence based artist creating detailed graphite drawings of trees, landscapes, and wildlife.
Message“The Hiker” is a graphite self-portrait of me imagining myself as an older man still venturing into the wilderness. In this drawing, I stand with a weathered yet determined posture, my gear well-worn but purposeful, surrounded by the textures and contours of a rugged mountain landscape. Through subtle tonal shifts and fine pencil marks, I’ve tried to capture both the grandeur of the terrain and the intimate details of aging skin and creased clothing—time’s passage alongside enduring vitality. Rather than idealizing youth, I wanted this portrait to embrace the dignity of age and the deep satisfaction of an ongoing relationship with the outdoors.
At its core, this work is my meditation on hope, perseverance, and continuity—an aspirational vision of a life still rich with exploration and wonder. The mountains in the background serve as both literal and symbolic peaks, representing challenges to be met and beauty still to be discovered. By depicting myself in this imagined future, I’m sharing my desire for longevity, health, and a lifelong communion with nature. “The Hiker” is both personal and universal, inviting reflection on how we might carry our passions with us as we age and how the natural world can remain a constant companion across a lifetime.
