Gunnar Norquist
Providence, RI
I’m Andrew Gunnar Norquist, a Providence based artist creating detailed graphite drawings of trees, landscapes, and wildlife.
MessageMy name is Gunnar Norquist. I'm an artist based in Providence, Rhode Island, with a lifelong fascination for drawing and storytelling. Trained in sculpture and studio art, I bring a deep appreciation for craft, material, and form to my graphite drawings. My work often explores themes of nature, spirituality, biography, and the quiet beauty found in overlooked details. Each piece begins with careful observation and ends with a finished drawing that captures a moment, a texture, or a story waiting to be told.
Much of my current work centers on large-scale graphite drawings of trees, landscapes, and wildlife — subjects that evoke endurance, memory, and belonging. Whether it’s the ancient silhouette of a baobab or the distinctive markings on a whale’s fluke, I’m drawn to images that hold history and individuality. I produce numbered archival giclée prints of these original drawings so collectors can enjoy museum-quality reproductions that retain the depth and subtlety of the original graphite work.
Beyond my studio practice, I bring more than a decade of experience in gallery preparation, installation, and teaching. This background shapes the way I approach presentation and craftsmanship, ensuring that every print you receive is produced and packaged with care. My hope is that each piece becomes not only a beautiful artwork but also a meaningful connection between artist, subject, and viewer.
In addition to making art, Gunnar is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys camping, hiking, and boating. He takes annual backpacking trips to the White mountains and beyond. The only thing he loves more than being outdoors is sharing that love with friends and family.
Gunnar has a bachelor’s degree in studio art from the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minnesota and an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of design in Providence, Rhode Island. He has exhibited work across the country and abroad including places such as Minneapolis, Providence, New York, and Paris.
Gunnar Norquist lives in Providence with his wife, Shannon and their dog, Weasley.
