The long-haul truck driver is a lonely person spending weeks on end away from home and loved ones as minutes pass into hours and hours into days and miles melt into the horizon. In Road Queen I am interested in exploring the isolation and immediacy of trucking and the kind of person that thrives in that role. I imagine a metaphysical tension between the tedious and the meditative, the immediacy of the present moment and the goal of the future destination. These men and women must be tough.
My mom recently went through a series of traumatic experiences. Seeing my mother's resolve to not give in to the loneliness and despair engendered by her circumstances inspired me to ask her to model for this drawing. She embodies, for me, some of the grit and tenacious resolve I imagine a truck driver needs to possess in order to survive.
