Who else loves the way Melbourne light seems to glow at the end of a hot summer day?
'Bay City Roller' is an original hand-cut stencil painting by Melbourne artist Geoff Cunningham, set near the St Kilda Esplanade as the light starts to soften and the day begins to cool. A lone roller skater moves through the scene beneath the sweeping white footbridge, caught somewhere between movement, memory and that particular Melbourne evening light.
Part of Geoff’s Summer Lovin’ series, this artwork taps into the nostalgia of beachside wandering and the freedom of daylight saving — eking every last bit out of the day before heading home.
Painted using hand-cut stencils, aerosol and acrylic, 'Bay City Roller' combines nostalgic Australian imagery with Geoff’s clean graphic style and layered stencil technique. The bridge gives the work its rhythm and structure, while the skater brings the human moment — focused, sunlit and gliding home through the last warmth of the day.
