Purple Flying Suit
Ruth Nichols and Harriet Quimby are two examples of aviatrixes who wore purple flying suits. The bright color was a powerful statement embodying the spirit of adventure as well as a clever way to be spotted by the press on the airstrip during races.
As noted by her friend Amelia Earhart in her book, "The Fun of It": - "Ruth Nichols always dresses with charm and distinction. Even in the air she is apt to be garbed in her favorite color, which happens to be purple, and she owns a specially made purple leather flying suit and helmet."
Bessie Coleman Barbie doll next to it shows another type of flying suit women aviators were wearing in the 1920's. (collection of the artist NFS)
