"Let’s Go Surfing"
This painting features Sunglasses Guy. He is one of 3 of my original characters that I’ve named, and his name was spontaneously concocted because I was talking with some artist colleagues at the gallery I was showing with and had to refer to the painting somehow.
This is one of 3 paintings that feature Sunglasses Guy.
I love the surf culture, although I’m not a surfer. The Endless Summer movie poster has a prominent spot in my house. My husband and I had just returned from a trip to California, on a self-guided tour of famous locations of surf music, movies, and legends.
So, when I picked up my sketchbook, I knew Sunglasses Guy was a surfer.
"Let’s Go Surfing" is the second surf-themed painting featuring Sunglasses Guy. He’s legendary with his sun-kissed skin and rose-colored glasses. He was originally going to be yellow, but my husband said it looked like a potato chip. I couldn't unsee that, so I gave my character crispy over-sunned skin.
I wanted Sunglasses Guy to have a textured surfboard and decided on the leaf pattern. It’s part leaf, which I’ve used in other paintings, and part industrial anti-slip tread like you’d find on a catwalk in a factory. I like it.
As usual, I include birds in my paintings. I’m a birding enthusiast. I paint coastal wading, water or shorebirds pink because their true grey and brown tones would not match my bright color palette. These birds are pink and all of them are teardrop shaped because that’s what I see.
And I've introduced the unexpected red theory into the painting with my dominant sunshine. If you're unsure what that is, a drop of red can bring warmth and drama to any color palette in room decor of in a painting.
"Let’s Go Surfing" needs a home and while it’s a perfect fit for a beach house or other coastal property, it’s a great image to hang in your urban apartment, country house family room, suburban land-locked dinette, homeschool classroom, oversized laundry/mudroom, guesthouse bedroom. You get the picture. It goes well wherever you need to fill a space on your walls with fun.
