These are the words of Te Ruki Kawiti and comprise part of the Ngāti Hine leader's sadness at the division amongst Ngāpuhi in his fight with the British in the Northern Wards of 1845/1846. The takuate 'lament' imagines the rangatira surveying the panorama view of the Ngāpuhi rohe from the Ruapekapeka site on the edge of the Tapuaeharura range.
