One of a series of 4 set in western cedar bungalow frames. The battles of Ōhaeawai and Ruapekapeka, 1845-1846, are the foci. The first New Zealand Land Wars monument was erected by Colonel Henry Despard to the memory of the 58th Regiment soldiers who died in the Northern Wards. The sandstone Tuscan column overlooks the Derwent River in Hobart. No mention is made of Māori in the inscription. This work is a response. A native kurī sits atop the column of tawa.
