"One evening, I turned the corner on Bow Street and looked down Ceres Street to what was a magnificent vista of a Salt Freighter at the wharfside. The setting was a piece of theater aglow with evening light from the skies and warehouses."
Ceres Street is named after Ceres, the ancient Roman goddess of the harvest. The warehouses date from the early 1800s and were the tallest buildings in America at the time. These buildings stored the grain and goods delivered from the ships. It is a fascinating testament to Portsmouth’s importance in American commerce at this time. Don's gallery and studio have been located in these buildings for almost twenty years.
