The Sharpshooter fishing schooners were developed in the 1860s. They were designed to satisfy the demand for faster schooners to deliver more fish to the market before the competition. The design favored speed over safety, and the commercial fishing ‘race’ lost hundreds of lives. Vincent's Cove is where these and other ships were built. Due to urban renewal, the shipyards are now interred beneath Rogers Street in downtown Gloucester. The source for this design was a vintage photograph that depicts three shipbuilding yards that made these and other schooners. This woodcut is a depiction of John Bishop's Yard.
This is an elaborate color reduction woodcut with golden yellows, browns, and blues detailing the historic architecture once found along the sea coast where livelihoods were dependent on the rich fishing grounds of the North Atlantic.
