'Point of View' is the view above the old smokehouse looking towards Rocky Neck in Glocester Harbor. The woodcut is hand-inked, cut, and printed at Don's studio at the Beacon Marine Basin in Gloucester, MA. The reduction woodcut took three months of studio work and has an edition of 25 with unique impressions. "For me, the building itself is a testament to the power and prosperity of this industry. I knew from the beginning that the enormity of the building would lend the design a look of simplicity, much like an early poster of a scenic location. Because of the extensive use of whites, this woodcut was a challenge. The result is a straightforward yet complex arrangement of vessels and architecture." ~ Don Gorvett
Gloucester, MA, was the celebrated capital of the fishing industry during the latter part of the 19th century. The waterfront was home to a large fishing fleet of primarily wooden schooners built in the shipyards of Essex, MA. The crowded waterfront had wharves, wooden warehouses, and flake yards for fish drying. Today, Don resides at the Beacon Marine Basin, in one of the last remaining warehouses of the past century, and little has changed. The structure's towering steep roofs still look out over Gloucester harbor.
