It is located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube River, in the Wachau valley. The current Baroque abbey was constructed in the early 18th century by architect Jakob Prandtauer. The abbey church is considered one of the finest Baroque churches north of the Alps, known for its twin towers and ornate interior. Melk Abbey is still a working monastery and a prestigious co-ed school with over 700 students. The complex contains a magnificent library with 80,000 medieval manuscripts and the remains of several members of Austria's first ruling dynasty, the House of Babenberg.
