The castle is located in the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Cultural Landscape site. It is most famous as the place where King Richard I of England, Richard the Lionheart, was imprisoned by Duke Leopold V of Austria for four months in 1192, on his return from the Third Crusade. The town of Dürnstein (German for "dry stone") was named after the castle, which was built around 1150 on a rocky outcrop.
The ruins offer panoramic views of the Danube River and the surrounding vineyards.
