The series "The Essence" reduces painting to its core: paint applied directly by hand, a minimal palette, and a few powerful gestures that explore pictorial space and movement. "The Essence" continues the work from "She Paints Outside the Lines," but pursues radical reduction and focuses on the pure, forceful presence of the gesture.
I almost always listen to music while painting. Although I have known the song for years, I recently watched the video for Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” for the first time and was completely captivated: her expressive, mime-like dance conveyed so much emotion in a way that felt immediate and physically palpable.
The theme of gesture and expression—of conveying something without words—kept fascinating me and influenced the following works: a pared-down color palette, hand-applied paint, and a few decisive gestures that explore the space and capture a specific atmosphere.
