BRUTAL2 - 2024

Works created for 'Brutal 2', a small group exhibition which is visiting The London Art fair in Jan '24 before continuing in an expanded format at Saul Hay Gallery in Manchester. The titles were generated using AI but the paintings were NOT!

A Tale of Two Cities

Architectural paintings on the theme of the the opposing life projections for a Brutalist building. these outcomes largely being gentrification or demolition. These paintings have a more desolate feel due to the limited palette and/or dark gestural areas.

Essential Shapes of Brutalism

A collection of works investigating the visual language of Brutalism, the shapes and proportions are used while thinking about the architect's creative process. Having identified a group of reoccurring shapes, paintings are created comparing compositions to how a building might be "composed" to work with light and space. The tiles are all single, five letter words found in an architectural photography book by Martin Dust. My first solo show 'Essential Shapes of Brutalism' was held at Cupola Contemporary, Sheffield, in May 2022

BRUTAL 2021

Works created for the 'Brutal' exhibition at Saul Hay Gallery. Many of the works titles come from some hand written notes found in a library book on Britalism. the notes seemed to be Spanish but written as it is pronounced rather than spelled correctly. (Other participants were, Jen Orpin, Mandy Payne, William Braithwaite and Emma Bennett)

Hong Kong Commission

Three very large paintings made for Fiona Hardie ID to contribute to her interior designs for the Executive Centre (Luxury CoWorking facilities) Central Hong Kong and Beijing.

Landscape Abstraction works on paper.

Initially an exercise in loosening up my studio practice, I covered my studio walls in 40x40cm squares of paper and began really loose mark making. The resulting paintings have less prominent architectural features and a lighter, more atmospheric feel. The best of the group were framed and shown at a solo show at Tandem Coffee shop and Gallery in Meanwood, Leeds.
