"The Summit of Eugene" is my interpretation of the view from the top of Champ-a te (originally named by the native Kalapuya, meaning rattlesnake), also known as Spencer's Butte. This vista dispersed amongst various hoops reflects the way my brain attempts to remember the beauty of this summit. I often find myself struggling to hold onto all of this view's vastness, but when I close my eyes I see the main focal point along with bits and pieces of the scenery surrounding it (i.e., a tree or a stone). While I cannot fully recall all of the Cascade Mountains and the Willamette Valley, I find my brain's newly pieced together view to be equally captivating and remarkable.
All layers in these pieces have been sewn together, embroidered, beaded and embellished by hand. "The Summit of Eugene" is mounted in 17 beechwood hoops and features over 40 different fabrics, along with a variety of metallic threads, DMC floss and various seed beads. This piece is approximately 4 feet wide by 3 feet tall.
