In Mexico, when the souls of the dead return to this world for a few brief hours each year, they are welcomed with a feast of all the foods and drinks that pleased them in life. It is a festival, neither somber nor macabre, which is universally celebrated and much enjoyed as a time of family and community reunion. Ofrendas are an essential part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. The word ofrenda means offering in Spanish. An ofrenda is built to honor lost loved ones. Offerings are placed upon the ofrenda, to help us remember, learn about and celebrate their lives.
