The overlapping catastrophes of the pandemic, racial injustice and the climate crisis have greatly impacted youth and their mental health, disadvantaged youth especially. Art can play a role in their emotional healing and build hope to counter despair. Murals can address this need because they stimulate the imagination in a positive way while building camaraderie to counter social isolation. The physical work of painting bright colors on large walls with a group of friends, while seeking to create beauty and meaning on critical issues, can be an antidote to years of separation and isolation.
