Totems have been used in various societies as signifiers of status. In Australian culture the automobile is totemic. Composed of discarded automobile parts, this work explores Australian car culture and its associated illusions of freedom within a complex sociopolitical environment.
The Judges of the Invitation Art Award commented that Graeme Burge’s work “combines various aesthetic codifications of street, craft and religious cultural iconography in order to challenge us to re-assess our value systems.”
Graeme Burge is the winner of the 2010 Invitation Art Award.
