By exploring the natural environment through a contemporary abstract (non-literal) response, the artwork is a playful and colourful addition to the children’s library area. The colours are based on day and night, moving from warm tones across into cooler tones. Conceptually this use of colour could also be interpreted as the land meeting the ocean. With consideration to the location, the shapes and forms of the composition are inspired by the low-lying coastal dunes and flora and fauna.

Figures of different sizes (the change in scale from giants to small figures) bring surprise elements to visitors of the space - some characters interacting in the reading nooks, some interacting on other parts of the wall. This aims to add a few layers of individual narrative to the overall mural that can be discovered by repeat visitors and create visual rewards for the observant.

Including various figures engaging in different ways in the reading nooks also aims to create more private and cosy spaces within the larger area. A few small animals are also included (turtle, bird) as more elements of interest for parents and children to discuss and find.

The overall intention of the project was to create an artwork that encourages imagination focusing on nature and growth. The majority of the detail is shown on the higher area of the wall as the bookshelves and seating below will sit in front of the lower half of the artwork.
