Parallels draws its subject matter from the artist’s own suburban environment, his shed, which also serves as a site for his art making practice. This space is often filled with cars, motorbikes, and bicycles in states of repair and disrepair, which at times sit alongside and cohabit the space with large drawings, maquettes, and ideas in progress. Built in the 1960’s, the structural trusses that are used in this and most suburban shed constructions are the feature of the work.

The ‘shed,’ a building-type with almost iconic and mythological status in the Australian consciousness, is synonymous with notions of masculinity and suburban living. The use of dark and emphatic line-work that, through the process of charcoal drawing, is simultaneously fraying and fragile alludes to these references.
