Guide to the Other Side of the World is a work constructed from dissected and discarded maps – the kind of wall maps found in school geography departments. Susanna Castleden is interested in the fragmented nature of finding out about the world, and how perspectives are often proximate.
Castleden reflects on what a map is, what it describes, and how closely our knowledge of a place is bracketed by how a map is understood. She says, ‘I was thinking about the sense of wonder of “what is on the other side? Where would you end up if you tunnelled a hole from Perth to the other side of the world?” Or less ambitiously, “is the map on the back of an atlas page the exact opposite of the place on the front of the page?” ’.
In this way, Guide to the Other Side of the World plots a series of land-based antipodal points, where the exact opposite sides of the world correspond and meet through the layers of discarded maps that describe each country.
