Merrick Belyea's recent depictions of landscape refer to the traditions of both figurative and landscape painting, but his approach reveals a political concern. In making works in this series, his process was to paint en plein air, as painters have done for centuries, but the results are muted, or mutable, in contrast to the traditional depictions of the Australian landscape as a robust arcadia.
