Indigo began with my first encounter with an indigo snake in Florida. I was surprised by the soft and velvety scales—a sensation I have never forgotten.
Snakes are so often feared, yet the indigo, despite being one of the largest snakes in North America, is nonvenomous and plays an important role in the environment. This piece grew from that moment of surprise and the understanding that what we fear is not always what poses a threat.
