Impr Leysen, Malines. The 1940 Italian language film, starring Armando Falconi and Conchita Montenegro, was originally released under the title, "La nascita di Salomè." The Spanish version, "El nacimiento de Salomé," was released in March 1941. An epic shot during World War II at Cinecittà, the studio founded by Mussolini to revive the Italian film industry, The Loves of Salome would presage the Italian epic films that wowed audiences throughout the world in the postwar era. Released in Italy as La Nascita di Salome (1940), it was directed by Jean Choux and starred Armando Falconi and Conchita Montenegro. The poster highlights the sensuality of Salome’s performance, which ultimately led to the violent beheading of John the Baptist. Here, she dances with the decapitated head as blood trails off the platter. In the background, figures revel before an idol, while the red and yellow tones of the poster suggest the flames of punishment that await. This poster is a window card, with space at the top of the poster for distributors to list the location, dates, and times of upcoming screenings.
