As with several other swords and sandal movies, the Last Days of Pompeii is based upon the novel of the same title written in 1834 by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, who, in turn, was inspired by the painting "The Last Day of Pompeii" by the Russian painter Karl Briullov, which Bulwer-Lytton had seen in Milan.
