French River by Chris James Cooper

Discovery

The French River follows an ancient canoe route through the Ontario shield — paddled by Indigenous peoples, then by French voyageurs, then by generations of canoeists who came after. Chris painted this stretch of shoreline in 2009, its layered granite ledges and windswept pines reflected in the still water below, the sky pale and quiet overhead. A wide, unhurried painting for a wide, unhurried river.

About This Collection

Chris James Cooper brought a rare combination to his landscape paintings — training as an ecologist and an architect, paired with a lifelong love of paint and light. His work was shown in several Ontario galleries during his lifetime, and reflects decades spent observing the natural world closely, both scientifically and artistically.
