I travel across the United States by rail as often as possible. Aside from getting to see the astonishing American landscape, traveling in an at least somewhat environmentally responsible manner and the ineffable thrill of lying in bed and watching the world scroll past, one also gets to witness the yearning emptiness of railroad yards and slow-rolling freight trains on their way out of town.
