Here the eighth sketch in my pandemic journal comes alive as a playful 'cutout' scene. I had been experimenting with negative space when I created this and had also been to see the Matisse exhibition of cutouts from his last years. These came together in a highly stylised semi-abstract piece with little triangles hinting at distant waves and clouds. The blue sun, the triangular waves and the cloud shapes are replicas of the shapes in the central image and give the piece some harmony despite the odd composition. Here, as in other pieces created around this time, I was beginning to be interested in playing on perspective. The viewer might be looking out over a sunlit balcony, but how does this plant hang in space in the strange blue circle and brown square?
