This abstract on a warm green background was distilled out of the dead leaves of a Crassula 'Jade' plant which had fascinated me first in 2021 and then drew me to them again some four years later. The story of the original plant that I killed through kindness - a talisman of good or ill fortune and prosperity depending on the state of its health - continues to resonate. The extraordinary similarity of the leaves that fell from an entirely different plant years later became a meditation for me on what changes and what stays the same in life. And this picture is also special because the essence of the plant is embedded into the composition in playful and technically challenging ways that I enjoyed pulling off. While earlier versions in this collection simply manipulate the montage elements of the leaves, this one was painted with a vector brush designed from the montage image itself. It was a technique I had tried out in 'Petunia on Midnight Blue' in the Rescue Petunias series and this takes the process one stage further. Here there is no attempt to convey any shape or colour from the original plant, rather there is a new vibrant use made of the dead leaves in the form of digital life.
