My husband and I were visiting a winery in Montepulciano, Italy, last fall when this scene caught my eye. As I stood and looked over the vineyards in the valley below, I was struck by the contrast of the red, yellow and orange berries against all the greenery, and the masses of olive trees on the hills in the distance. I knew right away this would be a painting in my Tuscany series!
In case you are wondering about the berries, they are called arbutus unedo. Arbutus is small tree native to Europe. It is colloquially called a strawberry tree because of its bright, red fruit. Nutritious and full of sugar, these berries are often used for making jams, pastries and alcohol.
Close your eyes and you are there!
