The sculpture honors former Thornton Women's Club member Esther Jewell, as well as all women concerned with the development and growth of Thornton. It was purchased to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Thornton Women's Club.

The statue was funded by a grant from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities (SCFD), a donation from the Thornton Development Authority, and fundraising by the Thornton Women’s Club.
