Artist Statement: I have always seen myself as an artist and creating art as my journey. It’s a path I’ve been on from the time of my first memories. I continue to discover its magic now as I enter my retirement years. Bob Dylan’s quote, “an artist has got to be constantly in a state of becoming,” is for me a guiding reminder to persevere in all my artistic endeavors. Currently, I investigate subject matter as a vehicle for my interest in mark making, creating texture, and manipulating color in my drawing and painting. Even though my intention is not storytelling, as soon as a figure appears in this landscape of lines and color, a story is inevitable. Who is she? What does she do or want? My only hope is that the figure inhabits the space in a fluid, natural way. The viewer is free to weave their own story into the artwork. In Yellow House, the house appears as negative space while lines and color dance around it seemingly giving it its outer structure. This style of defining form intrigues me. The visual action in the surrounding areas, suggest a lively and inviting environment that takes place around a lone, female figure. Does the figure represent me? If so, the story might be that I walk the path I’m on with enthusiasm and invite you to join me.
