Vibrant vintage original Chagall lithograph, featuring his familiar motifs of a beautiful young woman being serenaded by a violin playing goat. The violinist is in mid-transition from man to goat with the lady perched on his shoulder cluching a posy of flowers. Plate signed, dated and titled verso with a drawing of another hircine musician.
The goat is seen as a represntation of Chagall himself, as well as a symbol of unrestrained joy and happiness seen in the capering of kids. In the movie "Notting Hill" Anna (Julia Roberts) and William (Hugh Grant) discuss a Chagall. William comments: “With a goat playing the violin.” and Anna replies: “Yes – happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat.”
The twin lithographs were created by master printers Mourlot Freres in Paris having been commissioned by the art entrpreneur Teriade and distributed with the third issue of his stunning art quarterly Verve. One of 100 included in the rare bound hardcover omnibus.
14"x10" on cream double weight Arches velin paper, matted to 16"x12" in a gold wooden frame.
