One of the most famous images from one of the finest war photographers of all time. Taken on July 20, 1944 on Saipan, one of the Mariana Islands . After the Japanese troops on Saipan had finally been defeated, American forces returned inland to a cave containing over one hundred Japanese civilians and forced them to evacuate using smoke grenades. Among the first of the civilians to emerge from hiding were this terrified woman and child. Both were badly affected by the noise and smoke and it was a few minutes before they could speak or see clearly.
This is a rare vintage personal exhibition print in remarkable condition for it's age. Printed early 1950's with one Smith credit and copyright stamp, two "no reproduction" stamps (one annotated "Give credit W. EUGENE SMITH and Time Magazine" in pencil (written by Smith?), plus 3x PERSONAL EXHIBITION PRINT" stamps. There is also a handwritten "3" in a circle.
Full size 11"x14" print on double weight paper, archivally matted to 16"x20" in a black wooden frame.
